Danzantes Unidos DUF 2026 “Nurturing the Light” welcomes Mariana Romo teaching Folklorico High: Campeche & Yucatan for ages 13-17.

Maestra Mariana Romo has been an active member of the folklorico community since she was nine years old. Her shift from dancer to teacher and choreographer began in 2012 for Ballet Folklórico Sol de México in Riverside, California. Since then, she has taught for other dance groups such as Grupo Folklórico Sones de Mi Tierra, Resplandor de México, and Grupo Folklórico Las Pequeñas Raíces del Señor, and most recently Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet. In the summer of 2013, Mariana enrolled in La Escuela de la Danza de Jaime Buentello Bazán, to receive a teaching credential in regional Mexican dance. There, she had the opportunity to branch out and make connections with many other ballet folklorico instructors throughout Mexico. Mariana received her bachelor’s degree in teaching in Mexican regional dance in the summer of 2019. Through her experience teaching and working with different age groups, she established her own ballet folklorico group Ballet Folklorico Itzpapalotl which then shifted in 2020 to becoming the director of Latin Dance Club at Citrus Hill High School.

In this class, we explore the traditions of the Yucatán Peninsula through three iconic dances: La Mestiza, Chinito Koy Koy, and Aires Yucatecos. The class focuses on authentic regional footwork, posture, and expression that capture the elegance and joy of Yucatecan dance. In addition to dance, students will be introduced to traditional songs from the neighboring state of Campeche, including El Pavo, Pichito Amoroso, and Garanducha. These dances and songs were originally taught to me by Maestra Viviana Pedroza during my university studies in La Escuela De la Danza de Jaime Buentello Bazán in Nayarit, México. I’m excited to share this repertoire and regional heritage with a new generation of dancers through Danzantes Unidos.
