Folklorico Red Carpet – Sara Rosa Garcia

Danzantes Unidos DUF 2026 “Nurturing the Light” welcomes Sara Rosa Garcia teaching Folklorico Jr. High: Chiapas, Jalisco, & Michoacán; ages 10 & 11.

Hello to all my folklórico friends, My name is Sara Garcia, I’m 32 years old, and mother to a 9 year-old child. I’m so excited to be teaching at the Danzantes Unidos Festival again! Before I talk about my class and describe what I will be teaching, here are a few things about me . . . My mother Gloria Rodriguez is the whole reason I’m dancing and teaching. My mother was my first director and Folklorico Latino de Woodland has always been my group. I grew up with FLDW and for 8 years now I have been teaching the beginner, intermediate, and advance levels and it’s all kids aging from 6-18 years old. I also like to attend other dance conferences, such as Danzantes Unidos’ Festival Sin Fronteras in Mexico. I have attended EVERY one since 2018.

The Regions I will be teaching are Jalisco, Chiapas and Michoacán.

From Jalisco, I will be teaching the song “Las Abajeñas” and there is a small story behind it. Before Maestro Miguel Ponce (RIP) was feeling ill, he came to my dance group and taught us this wonderful routine and I will be teaching this in his honor. Please bring a rebozo and skirt for this dance.

From Chiapas, I’ll be teaching “Mi Casita” and with this song I will be teaching the steps and skirt work as well. The song is very uplifting with the use of skirt and hip work as well. The sound of the marimba makes the song even more fun. This dance is performed barefoot but I will have students dance in Folklorico shoes.

From Michoacán, I’ll be teaching the the song “Jarabe Michoacano” with minimal skirt work and focus on the footwork. I learned this dance from Maestro Julio Flores at DUF 2011. This dance can use either huaraches or the Folklorico shoe. — Sara Rosa Garcia
