University Folklorico Summit UFS 2016: Leaders Today to Create Legacies Tomorrow

UFS 2016 will take place at San Jose State University on February 19-21 and is being hosted by Grupo Folklorico Luna y Sol de San Jose State.  The organizing committee is pleased to announce the participation of Jose Somoza as the dance instructor for the Sunday morning movement session.

José Somoza has been a performer/dance instructor/director for nearly thirty years throughout the East Bay. He first caught the folklorico bug at the age of ten, when he accompanied his sister to dance with the Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Carlos Moreno. He performed with this group until 1995. Performance highlights include touring throughout Mexico and California and dancing on TV at “Siempre en Domingo” in San José, CA and in México City, México.

He is the co-founder of Grupo Folklórico Tlapalli in Hayward (along with his sister Leticia Somoza and friend Javier Silva). Since its’ founding, the focus of Tlapalli has been on passing on the traditions of Mexican folklore through dance. Assisted by his wife, Angelica Somoza, Tlapalli operates two studios in Hayward and Livermore. This year the group celebrates it’s twentieth anniversary with a series of performances and community fetes.  José also teaches at Sun Gallery in Hayward and Junction Ave. K-8 school in Livermore. He is the father of two adorable children and works full time as an electronics technician for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Registration for UFS 2016 is open to all leaders of high-school, college and university folklorico groups throughout the nation.
