Calabaceado from Baja California
The history of Calabaceado’s in Baja California is deeply rooted in the Vaquero culture. The city of La Misión was recognized as the birthplace in 2022 and declared a “Cultural Heritage Site”. Dr. Hernandez has consistently studied this art form with various Maestros from Baja since 1999, most notable Maestro Juan Gil Tadeo Martinez. Please bring a hat to the workshop. Also, bring proper folklorico shoes, as well as tennis shoes, to switch into once your feet need a break.
Chihuahua
Polkas originated from German and Polish settlers that came to Mexico in the 1800’s. Known as an upbeat partner dance, Dr. Hernandez will use her creativity to include those with and without partners. She has enjoyed dancing this region since 1978. She has had extensive experience learning from various maestros and using her own creativity to present entertaining dances.
