Folklorico Red Carpet – Santiago Ariza
Danzantes Unidos DUF 2026 “Nurturing the Light” welcomes Santiago Ariza teaching Oaxaca: Chinas & Chilenas for Teens & Adults; ages 15+.
Santiago Ariza is a cultural promoter and dance instructor with a career focused on the folklore of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Throughout his career, he has explored various dance techniques and styles, and has also conducted field research to delve into the history and origins of the different Oaxacan regions; always with respect for the culture and traditions of each community. His pedagogical approach aims to create a clear, structured and accessible learning environment where participants can strengthen their knowledge of technique, style, creativity, and stage presence.
As an educator, Maestro Ariza prioritizes consistency and respect for Oaxacan traditions, fostering a professional and collaborative environment. He has taught workshops and classes at various levels, both in Mexico and abroad, and has participated in cultural and tourism events at the state, national, and international levels. He currently directs the GUBIDXA Traditional Folk Dance Company, based in Oaxaca City, which has a twelve-year history.
Maestro Ariza will teach a workshop on Oaxacan “Chinas” (traditional dancers), explaining their history and origins. Topics would include the baskets, the figures on the skirts, and the differences within the “China” dance tradition. He would also bring folkloric materials so that students can learn the correct use of the clothing and accessories. Students will learn the “Gran Jarabe del Valle,” a dance of great traditional value in Oaxaca, as well as Oaxacan marches and devotional dances.
Students will also be introduced to Oaxacan “Chilenas,” specifically those from Pinotepa Nacional. The Chilena is a son (musical style) and dance, a primary characteristic of the Oaxacan Costa Chica region. Similarly, he will bring supporting materials so students can learn the correct use of the clothing and its origins. Both of these dance styles are of great cultural and artistic value and are performed every year at the Guelaguetza festival. If time permits, he will explain a third region of Oaxaca, the Isthmus, with a traditional son characteristic of Ranchu Gubiña, so students can experience the Isthmian elegance.
Cultura illuminates LIFE . . . nurture the light.
