DUF 2018 Spotlight – Maestra Itza Sanchez

Danzantes Unidos Festival DUF 2018 “Cultura Sin Fronteras” will take place on March 23, 24 & 25 in Fresno, CA and honors the ongoing work of folklorico artists sharing culture and traditions across the United States and in Mexico. Registration is OPEN at www.danzantes.org . Early Registration ends January 14, 2018.

INSTRUCTOR: ITZA SANCHEZ

Itza Sanchez is a graduate of San Jose State University (BA Cultural Anthropology; MA Cultural Leadership) having spent more than a decade working in Enrollment Services and Chicanx/Latinx Student Success for the university. Her current role as Technical Program Manager for eBay supports under-represented minority university students with technical internship and employment opportunities. Simultaneously, she works as a professor at SJSU in the department of Mexican American Studies as Artistic Director of Grupo Folklorico Luna y Sol de SJSU. She has dedicated over 15 years in developing, supporting, and advocating for the SJSU folklorico group as a mechanism to support diversity on campus, strengthen student involvement, as well as celebrate cultural achievements from an academic perspective. Her career and leadership in the performing arts has spanned more than three decades. While a student, she was a four year member of the university’s dance team and would spend the next decade as a professional dancer. Itza has delighted audiences all over the world having toured several times throughout México during her tenure as a folklorico dancer and has performed in Austria in the Eurobowl as well as Japan as an Oakland Raiderette.

At DUF 2018: FOLKLORICO HIGH (ADV): VERACRUZ COMPREHENSIVE (AGES 14-18)

A break down of regional variances and teachings of history and cultural context for a strong foundation of understanding of Veracruz’s Folklorico dances; from Huasteca, to Danzon, to Sotavento. Class will be taught at an advanced level where all dancers should have a mastery of the huachapeado jarocho and huasteca descanzo step. Learn from a university professor, broaden your understanding beyond high school, meet new people, have fun!
