INSTRUCTOR: IGNACIO DELGADO-HERNANDEZ

Ignacio Delgado-Hernandez is founder and chair of the Performing Arts Department of Esperanza College Prep in East Los Angeles, a new tuition-free college preparatory high school. He has trained in Folklorico, Jazz, Ballet, Hip-Hop, and West African. In 2014 he trained at Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez. In 2009-2014, he worked with Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company as a dancer, assistant director, and choreographer. He directed Grandeza Mexicana Dance Academy in 2010-2013. His focus in dance has shifted from dancer to choreographer, to director–working on shows and productions in southern California, Las Vegas, Bay Area, and Mexico. He believes everyone should have access to a quality dance education, regardless of income. His biggest reward has been training dancers, specifically working with adolescents. He believes the best dancers are those that have mastered both the emotional and technical aspects of the cultural arts while sharing their knowledge with future generations.

At DUF 2018: FOLKLORICO HIGH-GUERRERO & NAYARIT MESTIZO (INT/ADV)

Hello Students, I am leading a workshop on dances from Nayarit and Guerrero. Our objective is to learn two dances. The first dance will be Nayarit Mestizo. Dance two is from the state of Guerrero, sones de tarima. I am preparing a high intensity class driven by joy, passion, comradery, and a community centered classroom culture. There are three main focuses, 1) Zapateado, 2) Arm-work (machetes/skirt-work), 3) Athleticism and Flexibility. The expectation is high rigor and high energy. Please bring your focus hat on and a great attitude. This is a high cardio intensive class, dress appropriately (athletic gear only). Women are required to bring a practice skirt, abanico de palma, and panuelo. Men are required to bring a panuelo. If you plan to take this class it’s with the understanding that you are comfortable with direct in-the-moment feedback. I expect my students to be focused, self-aware, and reflective. Let’s continue the good work in spreading quality folklorico.
