Maestra Spotlight – Maria Valdovinos

Unnamed 3Maria Valdovinos was born in Los Angeles and raised in Stockton, CA.  She became fascinated with Folklorico dance ever since she saw a local group perform while she was in elementary school. Soon after, she joined the group and has been dancing ever since. Her passion to preserve our culture fuels her motivation to continue to learn about Mexican culture and to share it with a larger audience and in public spaces. Seeing her students perform is what brings her the most joy; knowing they have learned and now embody a part of their history and culture.

She founded her company, Ballet Folklorico Raices Mexicanas de Maria Valdovinos, in 2006.  Initially with seven students, the group now has over 60 members, three additional instructors and serves the community at two locations.  Please visit her group website at www.bf-rm.org
