PROFR. JOSE RAFAEL HERRERA OCHOA – FSF 2023 – Merida, Yucatan

Festival Sin Fronteras FSF 2023 Yucatan will take place in Merida, Yucatan from December 31, 2023 to January 5, 2024.  This is Danzantes Unidos fourth foray into Mexico for a weeklong intensive immersion into Mexican folk dance, music, folk art, history & gastronomy. Registration is open to Folklorico Directors and future directors and their families.



 

PROFR. JOSE RAFAEL HERRERA OCHOA was born in the municipality of Tunkás Yucatán.  He has been a  Jarana dancer since he was ten years old.  He earned his Bachelor of Preschool and Elementary Education from the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Mérida (UPN) and his Bachelor of Social Sciences from the NSC. He is a member of the Folkloric Ballet of the City of Izamal Yucatán and the Director of the folkloric group of the municipality of Tunkás. He studied Folkloric Dance at the Regional Center of Fine Arts of the City of Izamal, Yucatán. He is the General Director and Choreographer of the Folkloric Group of the Cultural Missions of Yucatan and has served as President of the XIII National Congress of the National Association of Folklorist Choreographers of Mexico. His passion and love for the investigation of traditional Yucatecan dance are manifested in his publication of “The Traditional Folklor of Yucatán” for the XIX National Congress of the Association of Folklorist Choreographers of Mexico A.C. 2008.

He has been a  lecturer and workshop presenter at the Higher Institute of Artistic Education “Calmecac” in Jerez Zacatecas Summer 2008; as well as a workshop instructor at the XXXIX ANGF Conference in Las Cruces, New Mexico USA. He has taught the Yucatecan Dance Workshop for the “Mixteco Folk Group” from Houston, Texas, as well as,  for the “Xochiquetzal” Folkloric Company, from the Municipality of Chihuahua. He has taught “Traditional Yucatecan Dances”for the Compañía Folclórica Magisterial de Tulancingo, Hidalgo. He is a member of the United Folklorists Association in Mexico Yucatan Delegation. He is a Regional folklore workshop speaker for the Cultura Para Todos program of SEDECULTA of the Government of the State of Yucatán in the municipalities of Bokobá, Dzitás and Tunkás.
