UFS 2018 “Bailando Sin Fronteras” will take place at the University of California, Santa Cruz on February 2, 3 & 4 and is being hosted by Los Mejicas de UC Santa Cruz. The organizing committee is proud to announce the participation of Malena Vega imparting the Movement Session on Sunday.

Malena Vega began dancing as a child working with some of the most prominent dancers of Mexican folkórico dance while her mother studied at UC Santa Cruz. Malena subsequently enrolled at UCSC where she served as co-director of Grupo Folklorico Los Mejicas. She has participated in numerous folkórico conferences in the U.S. and Mexico. She danced with Los Lupenos for 12 years and has taught at numerous places including Los Lupeños Academy, the School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, the San Jose Mariachi Festival, and the Santa Cruz Ethnic Dance Festival. She appeared in in last two performances of Linda Ronstaadt’s Canciones de mi Padre Tour. For three years, she served as director of Los Lupeños Grupo Juvenil. In 2013, Malena was a recipient of the Cashion Cultural Legacy Artistic Exchange Program.
Together with her husband Ali Luna, a musician and teaching artist of Bomba, they have formed a lifelong passion of education through the arts. They enjoy sharing the traditions of Mexican Folklorico Dance and Puerto Rican music with their children and future generations of dancers and musicians.
Registration for UFS 2018 is open to all leaders & administrators (ages 18+) of high-school, college and university folklorico groups throughout the nation.

The University Folklorico Summit (UFS), an initiative of Danzantes Unidos, is a three-day leadership and cultural arts conference designed for collegiate folklorico groups. UFS provides a forum for university folklorico group leaders to meet, share their best practices, and strategize for their communities.
